In the work of Emma Verhulst, the visual interpretation of her surroundings is central and, possibly a remnant of her training as an illustrator, storytelling still lies at the heart of her artistic practice. She starts from an intuitive drawing, uses the associations it evokes as a guide and uses narrative techniques to arrive at a moving image. Her drawings/paintings/prints are characteristically fragmented and tend to depict dreamlike impressions of stories, inserting clear representations in an alienating context. By confronting the viewer with a non-linear universe that is both familiar and strange, her work focuses on the banalities and (mis)communications of the everyday, often with humour as a subversive tool.
